An amazing opportunity for teens to work with Bay Area artist Malik Seneferu and create mixed-media art work that will be displayed along side Malik’s own painting at the San Leandro Public Library. Students in grades 6 to 12 will learn various art techniques while exploring the creative process and getting an introduction to the life and work of famed African-American writer Zora Neale Hurston. Enjoy an exhibit of quilts by the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland on display in the San Leandro Main Library atrium. The quilts can be seen during regular library operating hours. Visit www.sanleandrolibrary.org for hours. A special opening reception will be held Saturday, February 2 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm and will feature gospel music performed by the Allen Temple Baptist Church men's choir, as well as a presentation about the story of African American quilting.

In honor of The Big Read, students from Roosevelt Elementary School created wonderful artwork inspired by Hurston and her fellow Harlem Renaissance writer, Langston Hughes, and displayed in the Children's Library. 4th and 5th grade classes create mixed media images of Zora Neale Hurston and the five-acre garden where she grew up. 2nd and 3rd grade classes were inspired by the poem "Snail" by Langston Hughes, while 1st graders created fish after they listened to Hughes poem "Long Trip" where the sea is a wilderness of waves. Muriel will enthrall listeners with songs and folktales from various parts of the African continent. Lucy Anne Hurston, niece and biographer of Zora Neale Hurston, will be the keynote speaker for the San Leandro "Their Eyes Were Watching God" BIG READ kickoff. She will discuss Zora Neale Hurston's life and works along with a discussion of her own work as a sociologist and author. After the presentation you will have the opportunity to sign up for a library-sponsored book discussion group or create your own discussion group for "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Spend the day with us in San Francisco at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MOAD), located in the heart of the Yerba Buena Cultural District in San Francisco. The museum showcases the history, art and cultural richness that resulted from the dispersal of Africans throughout the world. Lunch is included. Tickets (limit 2 per person) will be available for purchase starting at 12:00 pm on February 4 at the San Leandro Main Library Information Desk. $30 includes transportation to and from the library to San Francisco, museum entrance, tour and lunch.
